Please write a formal analysis of a painting that you saw on our class trip. A formal analysis focuses on the way that visual elements have been arranged and function within a composition. Visual elements include color, shapes, perspective, subject matter, line, brush strokes and the use of light and dark. By analyzing the elements of the painting and its structure, you should come to an overall interpretation of the meaning of the painting and how it is constructed. Think about the choices the artist has made and why.
A good place to start when considering your “overall interpretation” is to think of what title you would give the painting. Then try to think why you came to that conclusion, i.e. how you would support that conclusion. The paper should be 5 to 7 paragraphs.
