Remuneration management

1. IndividualAssignment:CaseStudyAnalysis 2.1. Description The purpose of this assignment is to apply critically analysis on a given problem using literature review and analysis of the topics covered in this course relating. Once you have chosen the relevant literatures, carry out your analysis of the subject matter using relevant theories and practices. In order to ensure appropriate breadth, you will need to incorporate relevant peer-reviewed journal articles (including both empirical and theoretical pieces), published textbooks that are relevant to the topic. For peer reviewed journals, you must include copies of the abstracts when you submit your assignment. If you cite more than eight references, just include copies of the abstracts for the eight most influential pieces. 2.3. Topic/Question “The goal of total compensation management is to directly align employee performance to business objectives, demonstrating real value to both the business and to each employee.” Coy, C. (2008) ‘The Road to Total Compensation Management’, Workforce Management, 87(17), p. S3. Read the Case attached at the end in this document and carryout an independent analysis of problems and issues in relation to compensation. Using case analysis techniques and literature review academic literature, theories and research findings relevant to the topic write a report on the following theme. Discuss why compensation programs fails to achieve its objectives, the challenges faced by organizations in implementing such programs and how can this be countered. Use the Case given for specific reference for showing relevant examples where applicable. 2.4. Guidelines & Marking Criteria Use the following headings to structure your literature review. Note that the suggested word limits for each section ARE A GUIDE ONLY – that is, each topic is different, so will likely have a different spread of the 1500 words across these sub-sections. 1.4.1. Topic and Construct Definition (approx. 150 words) • You need to describe the problem you are going to be exploring. • In addition, you will need to provide key definitions of the constructs/concepts that you think for is important to explore this topic. 1.4.2. Theoretical/literature Review (approx. 450 words) • You need to find research that has considered your topic (i.e., the relationships you are interested in) and summarise what previous researchers have hypothesised with regard to this topic. • That is, you need to summarise what arguments researchers have made regarding how and why particular constructs should be related to each other. In doing so, you need to make it clear whether all researchers agree, or whether (and how) they disagree. • Ensure that your review is comprehensive (e.g., ensure it covers seminal articles/reviews in the area, and ensure that it covers critical classic research in addition to current literature). • Ensure that your review is structured effectively (e.g., tell the readers a story about researchers’ arguments regarding this topic by integrating the arguments from the different papers you have read, and using a logical structure to organise the information according to similarities/dissimilarities rather than listing one argument after another). oNote that the emphasis in this section is on theoretical arguments that researchers have made rather than actual “theories” (e.g., goal setting theory, social learning theory) per se. Where relevant, refer to actual theories (even those that are indirectly related to your topic if useful), or just stick to theoretical arguments if your topic doesn’t have any actual theories directly related to it. oNote that given that this section is a theoretical rather than an empirical review, restrict this section to a review of theories and theoretical arguments and do *not* refer to the results of specific studies. oTheoretical arguments can be found in pure theoretical papers, or the introduction/discussion sections of empirical papers. 1.4.3. Arguments why Compensation Plans fails (approx. 450 words) • You need put forward the arguments for and against the topic using evidences and or empirical research findings (e.g., findings consistently show a positive relationship between X and Y; or findings are mixed such that….). • Ensure that your view point here is not be biased on your likings but that it provides a critical review/analysis of the subject/topic. • As for the previous section, ensure that your review is comprehensive • As above, ensure that your review is structured effectively (e.g., tell the readers a story about the findings regarding this topic by integrating the findings from the different papers you have read, and using a logical structure to organise the information according to similarities/dissimilarities [e.g., start with empirical results only loosely related to your HRM303-Remuneration Management Assessment Details Page 2 of 10 topic and funnel down to those most closely related] rather than listing one study after another). oNote that if your topic is very new or specific, there may not be any studies directly related to it, so review studies that are the most closely related – e.g., those that have looked at other types of predictors/outcomes. 1.4.4. Possible ways to Counter the failure (approx. 350 words) • After carrying out the critical discussion about the topic and what the findings are, you need to highlight the gaps that exists in the current literature/research – i.e., what are the problems in compensation design that is making it ineffective. • You need to propose at least one recommendations with backing evidence to support your argument that can provide solutions to the subject. • In conjunction with the suggested solutions, you may include suggestions for future research that will address provide further evidence to your argument. 1.4.5. Conclusion (approx. 100 words) • You need to summarise what is known about your chosen topic and what is not known (i.e., what gaps exist in the literature/what still needs to be investigated. • You also need to summarise why existing knowledge on this topic is important (for theory and/or practice) and why it is important to conduct future study in this area.
