Choose a time period (about 5 to 10 years) in the 19th, 20th, or 21st centuries and analyze international economic relations in an issue-area (trade, finance, debt, etc.). Choose either topic 1 or 2. The paper is due on April 18, 2019 at the beginning of class (by 11:10 A.M.).
Paper topic 1: (1) Examine an international regime in an issue-area of your choice and explain one of the following: the development, maintenance, or change of the regime. Be sure to use at least two alternative theories of international regime change discussed in class and in your readings to support your argument. These include variants of hegemonic stability theory, transaction costs arguments, the constructivism, nesting concerns, and the like. Note: Although the theories of international regime change draw on various forms of liberalism, dependency, and neo-mercantilism approaches, your paper topic should focus on international regime changes theories listed above, NOT on the three schools.
Paper topic 2:
(2) Analyze how an external shock affected the foreign economic policies of two countries in an issue area (trade, finance, debt, etc.) during the time period chosen using two of the three following approaches: liberalism, dependency, and neo-mercantilism. Examples of shocks include, but are not limited to, the oil crisis, the end of Bretton Woods, the Asian financial crisis, the end of the Cold War, and the Great Recession of 2008. In answering this question, you may focus on the domestic politics of countries to some extent, but your main goal is to examine their foreign economic policies in the international realm of your chosen issue area, and not just their domestic economic policies. Instructions for Writing the Paper: The paper should be a maximum of 4000 words including all footnotes, the bibliography, and any charts (please include a word count on your title page, which should have your paper title, student ID number—not name—and date.). In terms of formatting, the paper must be double spaced, 12 point font, with no less than 1 inch margins all around, and pages must be numbered (bottom-center). This 2 approach yields about 15 pages. Longer papers will be marked down. All papers should use footnotes with proper citations (see http://assets.cambridge.org/INO/INO_ifc.pdf which is the Style Sheet (pp. 3-5) from the journal International Organization). Do not spend more than one page in total in summarizing the theoretical approaches. Your emphasis should be on empirical research and creative thinking. Assume that the reader is familiar with the models or approaches. Only paper topics approved by your GSI (initials on a proposed outline) will be acceptable. You must secure approval of your outline (see below) by February 28, 2019 at 4 pm the absolute latest (earlier is better!) so please schedule appointments with your GSI to discuss possible paper topics as soon as possible. SEE THE LAST PAGE FOR THE STRUCTURE OF THE OUTLINE. The paper will be due by the beginning of class on April 18, 2019 in both hardcopy and electronic form (bCourses TurnItIn) to your GSI. Electronic submissions should also be anonymized for online grading. Papers submitted after 11:10 A.M. on that day will be marked down 5% of your grade (out of 150 points) and an additional 5% every 24 hours. No exception
