COMPONENT THREE: WRITING THE PAPER
Writing as a Process: One way composition teachers demystify the act of writing is to treat it as a process instead of a product. In other words, we focus on the act of composing, which has many different parts, instead of focusing on the final product, the paper. The first part of the process, collecting, should have emerged from the research section. Here we are going to concern ourselves with organization and revision. Click here for more on this paper……. If you have completed the research component, you are ready to start organizing your paper. Organization requires a sense of purpose, what you want to say, and audience, the people you are trying to say it to. The first component should give you a sense of convention and audience, a sense of how people in your chosen field write to each other. To take this a step further now would be a good time to sit down and think through what you are trying to write.
1. Make an outline or cluster of your paper.2. Write a micro theme for your paper Click here for more on this paper……. Click here to have a similar A+ quality paper done for you by one of our writers within the set deadline at a discounted
I am sure you know what an outline looks like. There is no need to make this very formal; its purpose is to help you. You should also revise your outline/cluster as you make changes as you write. A cluster is a visual map of the paper. Start by putting your topic in the middle of a piece of paper and surround the topic with other things you want to say. Draw lines connecting the things that are related and organize these connections into sections. This should give you a visual map of how the parts of the paper are related. A micro theme is a paragraph that summarizes what you think you are trying to say. In both cases, you can revise these as a way of creating “self-talk,” the dialogue you have with yourself. In a long paper such as this, you may also want to consider writing yourself a note when you quit, detailing what you were thinking about before you quit and what you thought you would do next.
Revision: One of the hardest things to do is to make the time and take the energy to revise your writing. All of us would like to think we got it right the first time, but professional writers write at about a 4 to 1 ratio, meaning they write 4 pages to get 1 page that is worth keeping. There are two kinds of revision. One is proofreading/text preparation and has to do with the conventions and cosmetics of the paper. Save it for last; there is no sense polishing something you still have to revise. The more important and more difficult kind of revision has to with restructuring, developing, and explaining things in the paper. The purpose of the rough draft is to allow us to have a conversation about your paper. Because of that, a “rough” draft might only be a part of your paper and not the whole thing. One final thing, I will not accept a final draft that has not been substantially revised from a rough draft. The paper must be 15 pages, minimum. Click here for more on this paper……. Your grade on the final will be negatively affected when: Sources are not academic, there is not an adequate number of sources or pages, documentation is not attempted/accurate, the paper does not go beyond reporting on the issue. (see more on this in the assignment).
Component three assignments:Final paper rough draft, peer review and the final.
See the schedule for due dates.
Info will be posted later on the peer review and the rough draft submissions. the peer review grade will appear in the gradebook in Component 2.
The final paper is worth 1000 points as the schedule and syllabus indicate. The gradebook says the paper is worth 100 only because the gradebook in Moodle is set up in a way that grades over 250 have to be calculated as a percentage of the overall grade.
Final paper:
Final Research Synthesis AssignmentBy now you have begun to determine and define a problem in the field you are studying.  You have been reading articles that have given you insight into your field, and you have begun to narrow your thoughts towards some “problematic” issue that you have discovered or that you have been intrigued by or that people in your field are currently discussing and working on.  This issue will be the controlling idea that you will develop throughout the paper. Remember that you will need to take a stand or support your idea, answer a question with your own ideas, or propose your own question or argument. You must go beyond just informing your audience about an issue like you probably did in high school. Click here for more on this paper……. Currently, as you work with your research, you are preparing to engage in a conversation with the authors on this issue you have been researching.  As you prepare to write this paper, it will be helpful to read about how to and observe how other writers compare and synthesize sources. Because, in this final paper you will, in addition to joining the authors in “discussing” relevant topics in your field, be synthesizing your research, along with your critical thinking on the matter.  This synthesizing, involves interweaving your sources and your thoughts.  With 15+ sources, you will have plenty of material to work with. (Helpful note: as you read your articles, pay close attention to how the authors in your field synthesize and work with sources…. these articles, in a sense, are modeling for you the writings in your field.)
Read your articles and give yourself time to understand them, and the issue at hand, and then you will discuss what you are learning.  As you write, you will use your own critical thinking for the basis of your ideas and thesis, and throughout your paper.  In this writing, you will not be relying on the authors to make your points for you.  Your sources will be used to help frame the issue, but they will mainly be used to back up or show the complexity of the issue and enhance your points– again, not make them for you!!  This paper will include your original thoughts on the matter; your arrangement of ideas and source use will some of the many rhetorical choices you will make. The paper is to use at least 15 sources, and the length requirement is at least 15 pages.Among the sources, you can include website articles (however, you will be responsible to judge for professionalism and to be aware of bias and commercialism). The remainder of your sources must be academic. You need at least 15 sources to be academic sources–you can use others in addition to the 15 if you have a rhetorical purpose for them. Dictionaries will not count as an academic source. Each source that you are short will be a 5% deduction in your final grade.
Keep in mind that I will be checking sources, and you will need to document them on your works cited page –While researching PAY ATTENTION TO WHERE YOU GOT THEM.  If you use any web sources, you must include the web address. Part of your grade will reflect your choice of sources.
Throughout your synthesis paper, you will use formal, academic writing.  Monitor the use of “I” or “my,” and phrases such as “I think” or “I feel.” You should have the impulse to add these thoughts, but can include them without the “I” part.  Also, you will use the citation style of the field you are studying. You will select and use the proper style for documentation and works cited entries.  Your handbook is helpful with this.  It will be up to you to “study up” on your style choice (this is the purpose of the early assignments), use your handbook, and get help from the Reading and Writing Center on the Pickard and Harrison campuses or online. Additional Instructions:
* On your final paper title page or header make a note of the choice of documentation style below your name. Even though MLA does not require a title page you can do one if you choose—use the APA format.
* The paper should be submitted in Times New Roman 12 point font, with 1 inch margins. This keeps each person’s 15 pages the same. Remove the space between paragraphs:  In MS Word for to the home tab, then to paragraph. Click the little arrow to the right of the word paragraph. Check the “Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style” box. You may also have to change the after spacing (right above the box) to 0 (set these as your defaults).
*Include a title page for your paper.  Please use an interesting, original, relevant title. Include the documentation style you are using on the title page…
*Include a Works Cited or Reference page at the end of the paper, with the proper heading at the top, centered.  (Whichever style you use, you will be responsible for using it correctly.)
* The 15 pages do not include the cover page, outline/table of contents, abstract or Works Cited/Reference page- these are additional pages.
* An outline of the paper is optional.
*The thesis will be the statement of the position to be defended, argued, etc.  State your position clearly; this is will help you organize your thoughts and give the audience an understanding of your objective. *Pages should be numbered. Proper headers are necessary.
*Double-space the essay and reference entries.
*The rough draft is required before the final draft. I will not accept a final draft without seeing a rough draft. This draft has to be on the same subject as the final, and obviously, a step towards it.
The paper will be graded based upon:1. How well it fits the assignment and needs of the audience.  Remember to deal with a problem that you see within the subject/issue (go beyond reporting on what others have said)2. Use of voice.  You will need to closely match the tone, style, and writing of those in the field you are entering.3. Level of development, depth and length.  In academic work, it is not enough to just mention great points (even with sources); you also need to explain them carefully and show why they are significant to your reader.4. Connections/synthesis.  Explain how the points connect to one another and why they are important (remember do not leave readers wondering “so what?”).  You need to tie the parts of your essay to make a cohesive whole.5. Proper use of documentation style, source use, and source choice Click here for more on this paper…….
