Pay attention to the social factors that are explained in the film. Challenge yourself to go beyond “it’s the parent’s fault.” This is way too simplistic. What about the structure of the media? Deregulation? Changes in our broader material based culture?
Your task for this week’s discussion is to critically reflect on the agent of socialization that had the most impact (positive or negative) on your identity.
Step 2
Write a thoughtful, in-depth, post to the discussion forum in light of the questions below. Your post should be a minimum of 300 words (you can always write more). I suggest you write out your posts first in Word, so you can edit it for grammar, spelling, etc.
Draw upon at least two examples that were most interesting to you from the film. Discuss the impact of commercialism and branding on your childhood? Think about the toys you likes, the shows you watched, the movies you loved, it shouldn’t surprise you that there will be a lot of overlap with your peers. This tells us something. Ground your post in a sociological framework and discuss the agents of socialization (including media) as a shaper of your early life.
