Discussion Board 1.1 focused on the literature you read in Chapter One of our textbook. This Discussion Board focuses on the four stories you read outside Chapter One, the ones by Joyce,Erdrich, Cheever, and Hemingway. Once again, select one of the four stories and write your initial 250 word post. You might want to use this opportunity to test an idea to use in the paper in Week Two. Put an interesting idea out there and see if you get some response from other students. Students tend to ignore general posts that don’t have much to say. Instead they go for the unique ones. Make it a personal challenge to attract readers. It will help both you and your readers develop reading and writing skills.
Keep in mind that what I’ve given you is a minimum number of words for one post. You can post about a second story, but just don’t spread your 250 words between 2 or more stories. Spreading yourself thin like that will promote generalizations and a lack of depth. And of course you don’t need to stop at 250 words. It’s interesting to me that sometimes students tend to respond more to longer posts–perhaps sensing that the writer has a lot to say.
There are stories:
Eveline,” by James Joyce,
“The Red Convertible,” by Louise Erdrich,
“Hills Like White Elephants,” by Ernest Hemingway,
“Reunion,” by John Cheever
