In your primary task response, you will focus on the dynamics of being part of a group. Reflect back on a time when you were part of a group at your workplace. Address the following questions:
- How would you define your group at work?
- Do you think group members in your group had influence over other members? Why or why not?
- Was there a hierarchy in your group? If so, please describe it and explain how it formed and was sustained.
- Discuss at least two possible negative effects of groups in the workplace.

This week you will learn about group behavior and membership. You belong to many groups in your life, and you play different roles and abide by various norms. In this assignment, you’ll investigate your group at work. If you’re not currently working, you can discuss a past work experience.
Think about how group members influence each other, and what the hierarchy is within the group. Hierarchy is a ranking of group members based on the power and influence over others. Is there a hierarchy in your work group? There likely is if you have executives, managers, entry-level employees, and so on. Describe the hierarchy and discuss how it is sustained. Has there been a shift in the hierarchy of your work group or has it remained stable? Finally, talk about a few negative effects groups can have in the workplace.
