literary analysis
For your first major assignment in EN 102 you will craft an essay that analyzes a specific character
or theme in Katherine Boo’s
Behind the Beautiful Forevers
(that is, in the chapters we have read
thus far: the Prologue and/or Chapter 1).
Importantly, your Reading Journals and class discussions have been preparing you to craft this
essay! While the specific objectives of this essay are clarified on the rubric, the primary goals
are for you to demonstrate: careful, critical thinking; attention to textual detail; and your
ability to introduce, smoothly integrate, and analyze textual ideas.
As we have been discussing, literature can often help us see realities about our own world or
ourselves more clearly. This is especially true in Boo’s case since her novel is also a work of
nonfiction. As such, the purpose of this assignment is to discuss why your chosen character or
theme matters and what we can learn from it.
To achieve this task, you will craft a thesis that states your claim about the text (WHAT you are
arguing) and HOW your text led you to make this claim. In your paper’s conclusion, you will
explain WHY this discussion is important to the text, to society, or to our understanding of our
shared humanity.
