Writing a Counterargument

The section on Nature of the Issue in the argumentative essay requires you to write a counterargument and rebuttal. In this exercise, you will develop a counterargument to your argument that the issue is associated with the -isms and the forms of oppression. You will also develop a rebuttal to this counterargument. The counterargument and the rebuttal should each be a paragraph in length and at least one peer-reviewed journal article should be used to support a claim.

Counterargument has two stages: you turn against your argument to challenge it and then you turn back to re-affirm it:

Sample thesis: Food deserts and food insecurity are associated with classism, marginalization, and cultural imperialism among people that are low-income. Advocacy efforts such as equipping farmers markets to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and citywide initiatives to attract grocery stores to communities with food deserts are necessary to improve the health of people that are low-income and living in communities with limited resources.

Sample Turn Against:

There are people who claim that people are obese because they are lazy and lack self-discipline (Puhl & Heuer, 2010). The claim that people who are obese are lazy and lack self-discipline is based on the narrative of personal responsibility. The narrative of personal responsibility refers to the perspective that people are personally responsible for their own actions and outcomes, both positive and negative. In this case, the narrative of personal responsibility blames people who are obese for their own personal failings such as their choice to eat unhealthy foods.

Sample Turn Back:

However, claims that people who are obese are lazy and lack self-discipline fail to take into account the effects that structural and institutional classism have on people’s health. While personal responsibility does play a role in people’s health, it plays a minor role, compared to the effects that structural and institutional classism have on people’s health. For instance, poverty, food deserts, and food insecurity associated with classism, increase people’s risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes (Seligman, Laraia, & Kushel, 2009).Stereotypes that people are obese solely because they are lazy and lack self-discipline perpetuate stigma and classism at the interpersonal level, and this can lead to discrimination based on weight, a form of cultural imperialism because people who are overweight or obese are perceived as “the other” .
