Why the resistance for some to change?
For most of us, if we had a broken foot, we would go to the doctor and get it fixed. However, unlike a broken foot, poor time management is an area in which people are often aware that they are hurting themselves by not being more effective at, yet continue to accept the situation and negative consequences. What are some reasons that people do not wish to make the changes required to improve their time management, and in some cases, even brag or laugh about their lack of success in managing their time? Can anything be done to help change this mindset?
post number one:
Time management has always been a problem for me. The tasks that take up most of my time are not my highest priority and that hurts my success. I need to get at least 8 hours of sleep at night, but I am also a night owl who is most productive at night. Most of my classes however, happen early in the morning and waking up is a daily struggle that I have been battling for awhile now. I try so hard to be in bed on time to get enough sleep, but I find myself laying in bed overthinking about falling asleep and end up sleeping late as usual. After so many months and years of trying, I gave up and I sleep whenever I am tired and wake up for early classes and come back home for more nap. Most of the time, people aren’t resistant to the change, it is just that they have tried so hard and it is just not working because the world functions in the day time and they function in the night time when other people shut down. I am also very sensitive to caffeine and won’t sleep at night if I consume coffee that morning. As of now, I do not work and can’t imagine having to work in the day time, going to classes and also sleeping enough. Also, having planner and trying to manage time didn’t work for me because I couldn’t stick to it for various reasons. I do my home works and exam study sessions on time and I believe this is because I know it is a priority. I still slip somedays, but I am still trying to be strict on myself in the same manner I am strict on my class deadlines.
post number two:
I think a lot of people don’t make a change because they don’t believe they can. Some may have made efforts and failed and consider it a lost cause. They joke about it because they may feel that’s all they can do, and since it’s a rather common phenomenon it’s a way to connect with other people. Personally, I’ve joked about it because I’m frustrated at myself and it’s the only way I feel I can express that. Also, the stress associated with failed time management could be very high and joking about it helps with the stress. I think attitudes can be changed, though. Providing clear, varied strategies for managing time that start with baby steps can help. People tend to be resistant to change on time management, so starting with small, easy things can help ease people into better time management. I also believe it can make it easier to maintain- huge changes can be harder to keep up, sort of like new year’s resolutions
subject number two :
Applying the three-step model for avoiding procrastination
The WellCast procrastination video describes a three-step model for stopping procrastination. Follow this link to access their handout.
Now, think of a major project that you need to complete this semester. For your discussion response, describe that project in terms of the three steps of stopping procrastination and then provide feedback on the effectiveness of this three-step system.
If you do not have a major project, select something that you have done in a previous assignment or pretend that this is your assignment.
post number three:
So for mine I don’t have a big project due soon but I do have a pretty large math test that I severely need to study for. I believe this three step method will apply quite well to this. I really need to understand the material and the formulas better in my math class so this method should be perfect form that. As for my plan I will first make a hand written schedule of when I am going to sit down and study. My second step will be to actually study and through go through the material for my class. Lastly I will self test myself quite extensively to lock in all the information for this math class. I have high hopes that this method will boost the grade on my test!
post number four :
I have a quiz due on the 15th. I have maybe read a single page. It is an open quiz book. I have this fear that I wont do well. Just because I have no idea what is on the quiz. My first step will be to read as much as I can and try to relate it back to my life some how. Fun tasks that I can do for every chapter is to write down the main focus and some of the vocab words just so that I know I have the basic information down. I have to have distractions in the background. I have to have something playing or Joseph my boyfriend playing video games. It doesn’t really distract me it more or less helps keep my focus in a weird way.
so please replay for all the four posts
