In both cases of Hayden and Roethke, we have something called “ambivalence” in the poets’ attitudes toward their subjects and the way the poetic narrators describe these events with their fathers.

Choose one of the two assigned poems above and analyze how the poet expresses ambivalence. Focus on one or two lines and close read them, explaining their meaning in terms of how they convey ambivalence.
